Often referred to as ‘archiving’ or ‘zipping’ and ‘unarchiving’ or ‘expanding’.
The downloads at Ken Nicol Music are archived using zip file compression.
Archiving or Zipping is necessary in order to turn a folder which contains a number of different items into one single downloadable file that is then expanded back into its original form at the other end. When the folder is restored back into its original state there is no loss of quality whatsoever.
This process is often quite straightforward, and many computers will already have the software installed to successfully unzip these files; however, from one computer, and from one operating system to the next there can be the occasional hitch, and it’s quite possible to find that amongst programs designed to do exactly the same task (unzipping) some will work, and other’s will not. After extensive research we fully recommend the following software.
Recommended software:
For PC: ‘jZip’ (www.jzip.com) and ‘7-Zip’ (www.7-zip.org) are both reliable and free. ‘WinRAR’ (www.rarlab.com) also works well.
For Mac: By far the most impressive software we’ve found is ‘Springy’ (www.springyarchiver.com); this has worked flawlessly on all our Macs. The free version is good for files up to 50mb, but at a price of $21.00 the full version is a solid investment.
Also for Mac is ’The Unarchiver’ and ‘Stuffit Expander’ (www.stuffit.com).
